One of the objectives of the National Disability Insurance Scheme was to provide people who require reasonable and necessary support to take part in daily activities and hence, to encourage participation in the broader community.

And one such way is through Assistance with Daily Living – which provides support for regular personal activities along with supervision as part of your daily tasks.

As an example, if you enjoy tennis, or attending craft/cooking lessons or even singing – then why should you give up on these life pleasures?

What is defined as Assistance with Daily Living?

Under the NDIS definition, assistance with daily living covers a broad range of activities.

Generally, though, assistance with daily living falls under two broad categories;

  • Core Support, and
  • Capacity Building Support

Core Support Services

Core Support Services enable participants to engage and accomplish their daily life tasks and goals, which could include;

  • Daily living assistance, such as: bathing, dressing, meal preparation, domestic support, gardening, shopping, and medication assistance.
  • Purchasing essential commodities, such as: food, nutrition products, medicines, and sanitary products.
  • Social interaction including: recreational activities or even maybe a supported holiday.

Capacity Building Support

While Core Support Services are designed to assist with basis day-day living, Capacity Building Support is aimed at helping the participant build their independence and skills, which could include;

  • Helping to understand and work through the various NDIS options available to participants, e.g. how the participants budget may work within the NDIS guidelines.
  • Helping the participant to find and keep a value adding job including the upskilling options that are available to secure a job to their liking.
  • Improving their living arrangements, which can include assistance with completing paperwork to find the right accommodation, understand their obligations with respect to rental payments, as well as daily planning and budgeting.
  • Helping to improve general health and well being through assisted physiology, gym attendance, personal training and even hydrotherapy.
  • Improved learning support, particularly for the younger demographic who may be transitioning from school to further education with an emphasis on improved, language literacy, numeracy, managing academic workloads and of course, resilience training to deal with learning and educational demands.
